There is no single salary for private household staff in Switzerland. Compensation depends on the role, canton, experience, working pattern, languages, travel, live-in or live-out arrangement and the level of responsibility. For UHNW households, market packages can sit materially above legal minimums because the roles often demand specialist experience and significant flexibility.
Start with the legal framework
Switzerland does not have one nationwide minimum wage applying identically in every canton. Domestic employment is also subject to specific employment rules and standard contracts.
Geneva, for example, has a cantonal minimum wage. From 1 January 2026 the official Geneva minimum is CHF 24.59 gross per hour. Employers should always verify the rules applicable to the canton and employment arrangement rather than relying on a generic national figure. See the official Geneva guidance.
Legal minimums are a floor, not a guide to compensation for an experienced private-service professional.
What drives private household salaries?
The same job title can describe very different roles. A Housekeeper working a predictable weekday schedule in one residence is not directly comparable with a travelling Housekeeper supporting several international properties.
Compensation is typically influenced by:
- seniority and private household experience;
- location and cost of living;
- live-in or live-out status;
- weekly hours and weekend requirements;
- rota or seasonal schedules;
- international travel;
- languages;
- driving or specialist skills;
- management responsibility;
- childcare or educational qualifications;
- discretion and experience with UHNW principals.
Think in total package, not only salary
A strong offer may include accommodation, meals while on duty, travel costs, health or insurance arrangements, bonuses, pension obligations, overtime treatment and additional leave. Employers should define these elements clearly before presenting an offer.
For live-in roles, accommodation should be described precisely. For travelling positions, candidates will want to understand how travel days, rest periods and expenses are handled.
Senior roles require a different benchmark
House Managers, Estate Managers, Chiefs of Staff and highly experienced Private Chefs are not usefully benchmarked against general domestic employment rates. Their compensation reflects leadership, budgets, specialist expertise, international mobility and the degree of trust placed in the role.
For these searches, a tailored market assessment is more useful than a generic salary table.
Avoid setting compensation before defining the role
One of the most common recruitment problems is choosing a salary first and then trying to fit a broad list of responsibilities into it. The better process is to define the actual scope, working pattern and candidate level, then benchmark a package that can attract and retain the right profile.
