Monaco is a highly international private staffing market. Residences are often compact but operationally demanding, principals may travel frequently, and household employees can be expected to work seamlessly across Monaco, the French Riviera and international destinations. Hiring well therefore requires more than finding a strong CV.
Define the household before defining the candidate
Start with the reality of the residence: number of family members, children, pets, guests, travel patterns, staffing structure and service expectations. A Housekeeper working independently in an apartment requires a different profile from a Housekeeper joining a fully staffed residence with a House Manager, Chef and Chauffeur.
Clarify the schedule, weekends, flexibility, live-in or live-out arrangement, travel requirements and whether the candidate must already live within practical commuting distance of Monaco.
Decide which role you actually need
Private families sometimes advertise one title when the responsibilities describe another. Common Monaco searches include Housekeepers, Nannies, Governesses, Private Chefs, Butlers, Chauffeurs, Personal Assistants, House Managers and Estate Managers.
If one person is expected to clean, manage laundry, shop and prepare simple meals, say so clearly. If the role includes staff supervision, budgets, contractors and property projects, the search may require a House Manager or Estate Manager rather than a senior Housekeeper.
Consider language and cultural fit
French is valuable for local suppliers and daily life, while English is frequently the working language in international households. Italian, Russian, Arabic and other languages may also be important depending on the family. Fluency should be assessed according to the actual role rather than added as an unnecessary requirement.
Cultural awareness matters just as much. Private staff work close to a principal's home, routines and confidential information. The right candidate should understand professional boundaries and adapt naturally to the household's communication style.
Assess private-service experience, not only luxury credentials
Five-star hospitality experience can be valuable, but a private residence operates differently from a hotel. In a private home, staff need to anticipate preferences while remaining unobtrusive, handle changing schedules without visible friction and protect confidentiality without constant supervision.
During interviews, ask candidates to describe real situations involving last-minute guests, travel changes, delicate wardrobe care, service recovery, family privacy or coordination with other household staff.
Complete references and background checks before placement
References should confirm dates, responsibilities, performance and the candidate's conduct in a private environment. Identity, work eligibility and relevant qualifications should also be checked. For sensitive appointments, a criminal background check is an important part of due diligence.
Merlo's process is designed around this principle: verification should support the shortlist, not become an afterthought after a family has already decided emotionally on a candidate.
Discuss compensation realistically
Monaco is a competitive market and strong candidates often compare more than salary. Schedule, annual leave, accommodation, travel frequency, overtime expectations, contract structure and long-term stability all influence whether an offer is attractive. The most effective approach is to define the complete package before interviews begin.
Use a targeted search rather than a broad CV database
For private appointments, quality usually matters more than volume. A focused search can identify candidates whose experience, availability, language skills and personality genuinely align with the household.
