Private staff may have access to a principal’s residence, family routines, travel plans, vehicles, guests and sensitive information. That proximity changes the standard of recruitment required. A strong CV can demonstrate experience, but it cannot by itself establish whether a candidate has the judgement and professional boundaries needed in a private environment.
Private environments require a different assessment
Conventional recruitment often begins with job titles, transferable skills and available CVs. Private staffing requires additional context: how the residence or office operates, who the candidate will interact with, what information they may access, the level of visibility around the principal and how much independent judgement the role demands.
Discretion must be evaluated, not assumed
Candidates should be able to explain how they have handled confidential information, high-profile principals, private travel and sensitive household matters. Professional discretion is demonstrated through behaviour, judgement and boundaries, not simply by describing oneself as discreet.
Reference checking has greater importance
Previous employers or authorised referees can help confirm not only dates and responsibilities, but also reliability, conduct and the relevance of the candidate’s private-service experience. Role-specific licences, certificates, eligibility and identity should also be verified before introduction.
Compatibility influences retention
In a private residence, family office, yacht or aircraft, the quality of the working relationship can be as important as technical competence. Communication style, adaptability, cultural awareness and the ability to work with an existing team all influence whether a placement will remain successful.
A targeted search protects the client’s time
A curated shortlist is not simply a smaller list. Each candidate should have been measured against the complete brief. This makes client interviews more efficient and reduces the risk of progressing candidates whose experience looks suitable on paper but does not fit the actual environment.
Private recruitment is ultimately an exercise in trust: competence must be established, but suitability also depends on discretion, judgement and compatibility.
